Board,' Girls And Young Women Led Movement To Desegregate Schools (Georgia Public Broadcasting) The 1954 Supreme Court decision Brown v. Board of Education made segregation of America’s public schools illegal. But decades before Thurgood Marshall argued for Linda Brown's right to attend the all-white school closest to her house in Topeka, Kansas, lawsuits brought by little girls and young women chipped away at the foundations of segregated education. New research finds their grassroots efforts paved the way for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People's (NAACP) legal battle to integrate schools nationally. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/579249b9b3db2b3f853545f5/1590252925314-C5ZF3U4SBDOYQYINECJZ/shepherds_1970.jpg Stories - How A Near-Fatal Injury Inspired One Atlanta Family To Start Shepherd Center, Give Care To Thousands (Georgia Public Broadcasting) James Shepherd Jr. and Alana Shepherd joined “On Second Thought” host Virginia Prescott to talk about how they turned a personal catastrophe into a world-renowned treatment and rehabilitation center for spinal cord and brain injuries. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/579249b9b3db2b3f853545f5/1590253041860-7UKEZ26HX7F8ACQJ7U9H/GDA-MICHAEL.jpg Stories - After Michael, Georgia Farmers 'Can't Walk Away,' But Struggle To Start Over (Georgia Public Broadcasting) After Hurricane Michael, Irwin County pecan grower Randy Hudson and Berrien County cotton grower Mark Peele told "On Second Thought" they expect it could take generations for Georgia farmers to recoup their losses — if ever. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/579249b9b3db2b3f853545f5/1590253141746-CZK4J1TTI9ZMR8NEEHUL/a0906381525_10.jpg Stories - On 'Omoiyari,' Kishi Bashi Transcends Time — And Politics — With Compassion Kishi Bashi made a name for himself with the shiny, fantastical indie pop of his first three albums. (The singer and multi-instrumentalist also made a pseudonym for himself: his stage name is a mashup of his first initial – K, for Kaoru – and last name, Ishibashi.) Ishibashi's newest record Omoiyari (available May 31) takes a more sober turn. From Japanese, "omoiyari" roughly translates as compassion or kindness shown toward others, which stirred in the Athens-based musician after President Trump's administration placed a travel ban on people from specific, predominantly Muslim countries. http://www.leightonrowell.com/experience daily 0.75 2024-10-25 https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/579249b9b3db2b3f853545f5/1590364091643-HZ7CMDBN6ARYE6PPPZ9P/interview.jpg Experience - Multimedia journalist http://www.leightonrowell.com/graduate-work daily 0.75 2020-06-09 https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/579249b9b3db2b3f853545f5/1589292828821-3GJ7VTSDRVIT0CI0ICGR/Yellow+Cute+Animal+Logo+%281%29.png M.S.
